Targeting your audience is hard. It can waste your time, money and sanity when you are not reaching your target audience. Your business is doing good for the environment and planet. So why can’t people support you. Why can’t your target audience see how good you are doing at being eco friendly?
You are posting content to instagram, facebook, linkedin (everywhere!) and still all you hear is crickets? Why have you wasted your time posting for no result? Why are you paying $100 a week for google ads? Or $50 a post for Facebook ads?
You need to capture your audience’s attention and show them your wonderfully eco-conscious, eco-friendly business.
Sorry but are you focusing on style over substance?
Think about your social media page (instagram, facebook whichever) can you clearly see what your brand is. Put yourself in your target audiences shoes, on first glance would they see:
- What you sell (product/service)
- Would they see your brand name
- Would they know your point of difference
- Would they know why you exist
- Would they see a consistent brand message in the colours, font, emotions, images you use
- Would they know how to contact or buy your product/service immediately
If you can’t answer impartially or have to second guess yourself then the answer is probably no.
And that is okay. You can change that today.
Being able to be clear and concise with your target audience is the most important thing you can be. Everything you post must have a purpose. Use your posts to tell your brand story, illustrate your purpose and demonstrate your values.
This might sound like a lot but let me break it down.
- Image – choose an image that serves your purpose. If you are telling your Brand Story
- Headline – make it stick, you want a headline that has substance and is eye catching. If that makes it controversial so be it.
- Hashtag – use your 30 (that’s right 30) hashtags effectively. Allow them to be another way that you can connect with your target audience. #ecofriendly #ecoconscious #ecopreneur #greenbrand #wearethefuture
And each of these things creates a connection between you and your target audience.

You are an eco-conscious genius. So tell them that.
Give them a reason to read your post. Make them stop scrolling for a few seconds. You have a business with eco innovative products and services so show your target audience how eco friendly you are.
Use imagery and a headline that will capture your target audience emotions, values or interest.
But don’t try and do it all at once. Have different categories you post about like:
- Your innovative eco friendly products/services
- Behind the scenes of products/packing/testing anything that shows how you chose to create an eco-friendly product (you’ve spent the hard yards creating an amazing product so show them!)
- Your lifestyle – how do you live your life eco-friendly
- Testimonials – pump yourself up, let your target audience know how much other people have loved your product/service
But capturing your audience isn’t just about copy. Don’t alienate any market. Be inclusive and use the image alt text to write what the image is about, so visually impaired users can understand what you are posting. And for hashtags consider #WritingLikeThis as the audio for visually impaired distinguishes the capital letters as new words so reads the hashtags as you intended, not as smush.
Don’t forget to interact with your users. How can you expect them to interact with you if you don’t with them.
Tips to implement today are:
- Follow 5 new accounts each week – they could be your ideal audience, collaborator, most attentive follower, competitor etc.
- Comment on their posts
- Always reply to people that comment on your post or comment
- If you’re comfortable follow them back
And each of these things creates a connection between you and your target audience.

Drive your target audience home and tuck them into bed.
Do you give your target audience a reason to read your post? Are you wasting their time?
Give them satisfaction by fulfilling their desire to know why they just read your post.
Everything you post has a purpose right? So end your post with a Call To Action. What do you want your target audience to do? Click a button, take a quiz, go to your website, but your product, like, share, comment, participate in a giveaway?
Pick one of the many options that suits the purpose of your post and let your audience know.
Telling your audience what you want them to do will leave them feeling satisfied, but also sure of themselves and you.
Make it clear and concise. Maintain your purpose and create that connection that captures your target audience and converts them into being an engaged audience with your amazing eco-friendly brand.
This isn’t an instruction manual, thought and interpretation are required on the readers behalf.
